Lofoten Islands, Norway

Scandinavia

Scandinavia is home to some of Northern Europe's most wildest sights from shimmering ice blue lakes to the clattering herds of reindeer and the quaint villages along the coast that look as if they were painted in place by an artist. Scandinavia is more than just fjords, mountains and pine forests.

Turas Travels Scandinavia

Iceland

The raw, rugged and extreme landscapes of Scandinavia are inescapable and are also the dominant feature of Iceland. This country was shaped by volcanic activity and carved by glaciers making this an outdoor paradise. Don't be fooled by it's Northern location, winter does show it's face here but not for long. The warmer gulf-stream makes outdoor activities possible, year round. Iceland is a perfect quick stop en-route to other European destinations! Let me suggest destinations and activities based on your interests and offer options for walking

on age-old glaciers, sea snorkeling between the tectonic plates, ice cave hiking or learn how to cook on a local farm utilizing the volcanic energy of the earth. If you've ever wanted to marvel at the magical Northern Lights or bathe like a local in a bubbling mud pool or geothermic hot tub, Iceland is the destination of your dreams!

Norway

Famous for Skiing, Trolls and Vikings, Norway is one breathtaking step after another. One of my favorite ways to see the diversity of the country is by rail. From your seat you will see the mighty mountain ranges, dramatic waterfalls and river valleys, glaciers and lakes. The drastic change in elevation allows for an overnight, or a hike to experience the grandeur of the famous Norwegian fjords. Norway is home to several of the most scenic railway destinations in the world. The Rauma, Bergen, Nordland and Dovre Railways will elevate your trip to Norway to

Denmark

The only Scandinavian country connected to mainland Europe, Denmark manages to retain it's Scandinavian charm. "Hygge" as the Danes call it, the concept and mood of wellness and comfort. You don't have to be in the Capital city long to appreciate Hygge. Copenhagen is best seen like a local: on a bike! Bike rentals are all over the city and the best way to get to know this bustling city is to hop on a bike and follow along. All the major sites are within cycling distance: watch the changing of the guard at the Palace, get up close to the little mermaid or enjoy a freshly caught lunch

lunch at an outdoor cafe in the Nyhavn district. Denmark has long celebrated Royal history complete with castles, Viking heritage and quaint villages and towns that inspired some of the literary worlds greatest authors. Denmark is a great stop when visiting other Baltic Sea destinations, or enjoy the capitols by using Copenhagen as your starting point. Daily ferries and various cruise ships call into Copenhagen daily.  Denmark is also connected to the rest of Europe by contiguous rail line. Let me assist you with adding a visit to Denmark to your European itinerary.

Sweden

With over 8000 tiny islands, the coastline of Sweden is unmistakable. The Minnesota of Scandinavia (as I call it!) Sweden is full of lakes, pine trees and outdoor sporting opportunities like no where else. Stockholm is a very modern medieval city which retains it's old style charm. Your best option is to stay in Gamla Stan, or old town, which is the center of the city and you'll be able to leisurely enjoy this quaint part of the city on foot! Stockholm is famous for afternoon coffee, be sure to take part and relax. Gothenburg is Sweden's second largest city and worth

a stop. Home to some quirky museums and large inner-city parks, the laid back atmosphere and less tourists make this an ideal home base for a few days. Stockholm is connected to Oslo by rail. This 5 hour journey is worth the trip as it guides you along the lush green rural Swedish countryside.  Sweden is a great stopping point for a visit through Scandinavia, in addition to a rail journey it is also a main shipping port with several ferry and cruise options available. Let's talk about including Sweden!

Finland

The hidden jewel of Scandinavia, the home of Santa Claus and the Midnight sun, Finland has it all: mountains, skiing, lakes, coastal beaches and the Arctic North. The lesser visited Scandinavian country is usually a popular winter destination. You can find Santa year round in Rovaniemi, near the Arctic Circle. Glass igloo's and woodland cabins are available for a magical overnight experience under the winter Northern Lights. In summer, the sun barely sets! Enjoy the great outdoors, Finnish style, in lake side cabins, local sauna's and refurbished coastal

lighthouses. Helsinki is the capital of Finland and the largest city in Finland. There are three main Sami languages still spoken in Finland and various touring opportunities to see the indigenous peoples of Northern Lapland. Finland has a modern railway system complete with overnight cars for an option to take a longer journey to get from bustling city center of Helsinki, to the North. Regardless of the season, there isn't a bad time to visit Finland.
